The Netflix long-term view - and multi-service discovery

Netflix recently published their Long Term View for their investors, and it makes for interesting, exciting and encouraging reading about the future of television. Yes, it's an investor relations document that's a pleasure to read! And here at Tank Top Towers we agree with almost all of it - though there's a big piece of the puzzle omitted from their discussion, and we'll come to that shortly.

They say loads of things about the state of television today that have us vigorously nodding our heads.
"Finding good things to watch isn't easy or enjoyable."
"People don't love the linear TV experience where channels present programs at particular times on non-portable screens with complicated remote controls."
"While Internet TV is only a very small percent of video viewing today, we think it will grow every year."
Netflix is increasingly focused on exclusive content - like the recent, excellent remake of House of Cards. "We are about fantastic content that is increasingly only available on Netflix."

But they acknowledge that they have "competitors-for-content". A lot of the video on demand services are creating, commisioning or licensing their own exclusive content. As Netflix says, "Consumers will choose and consume from multiple options. Generally, cable and Internet networks have mostly exclusive content against each other."

So we'll have to use multiple services to get access to the full range of high-quality entertainment that's available.  But one thing Netflix don't talk about is how consumers will find great content to watch without the pain of trawling through the different interfaces on their favourite services.

We think this question of multi-service discovery will be increasingly important. Consumers will demand easy and enjoyable interfaces for finding great content across the different services they use.

Like Tank Top Movies.

What are the best movies on Lovefilm?

Lovefilm Instant is a service that is at the forefront of content on-demand, but it still isn't easy to know which are the best movies on Lovefilm.  Competing heavily with Netflix, Lovefilm seems to be holding its own in the Netflix vs Lovefilm movie wars!

Our mission here at Tank Top Movies is to make finding the best films super-easy, whichever provider you use to watch movies online.  So, go to Tank Top Movies, select Lovefilm and then you'll see the best movies right away in a gorgeous interface that encourages discovery.

Or, you can read on and I'll tell you the best Lovefilm movies.  I'm not writing my personal opinion on the best movies here, but rather I'm using the Tank Top Movies algorithm to show you the best that Lovefilm has to offer.

Our algorithm mixes expert critic and user ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, also using recency so that newer movies that are highly rated will be displayed higher up the Tank Top mosaic.  We have big plans to tailor the service to you, including personal recommendations, so every time you visit us you'll find a film that you want to watch at the top of the page.

Time for me to shut up and show you the best Lovefilm movies:

Balibo
Mother
The Cove
Barney's Version
Crazy Stupid Love
Black Swan
The Ides of March
Hunky Dory

Silver Linings Playbook - On-Demand

I decided to watch Silver Linings Playbook at the weekend. I wanted to see what all of the fuss was about after Jennifer Lawrence won the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as Tiffany.  Well, it was hugely enjoyable!

Very quirky with some funny moments, Silver Linings Playbook follows the relationship between Pat (Bradley Cooper), just released from a mental institution and Tiffany, a young, newly-widowed woman with problems of her own. The on-screen chemistry is great between Pat and Tiffany and as a viewer you really root for their characters, warts and all.

Lawrence and Cooper are surrounded by an all-star cast which takes the pressure off somewhat but also adds some hugely enjoyable characters.  Robert De Niro plays Pat's neurotic Dad, a bookmaker and Philadelphia Eagles fan, Julia Stiles makes an appearance as Tiffany's suffocating Sister and Jacki Weaver plays Pat's long-suffering Mum.  In fact, all of the supporting characters also have some form of mental quirk which is a central tenet of the film.

I'm also a fan of American Football which really helps with this movie as a decent chunk of it is spent discussing football, arguing over football or fighting over football!  This could potentially put off those who hate the sport but I know many people who managed just fine.

I'll leave it there so as not give away the ending (no spoilers!). Of course, you can find it for yourself on Tank Top Movies.  Happy viewing!

What are the best movies on Netflix?

Netflix is making a lot of waves in the UK at the moment but finding the best films to watch is hard, especially on-demand.  One question from on-demand users that I hear a lot is "what are the best movies on Netflix right now?" so I thought that I'd oblige in this blog post.  Of course, one of the best things about Tank Top Movies is that it is an easy way to find out this information, no matter which movie service you use.  Just select the Netflix service and voila, we will show you all of the movies on Netflix in a beautiful and easy-to-use mosaic pattern!

But, you may prefer for me to help you out here.  Of course, I could write a subjective post here about the Netflix movies that I personally like best (and I may subject the world to that at some point in the future!). However, because I'm a daft bloke who would no doubt have every silly comedy movie or gory action film in my list, I'll stick to using the Tank Top Movies algorithm to highlight the best Netflix films of the moment.

The Tank Top Movies algorithm combines the critic and user ratings from Rotten Tomatoes, factoring in time so that recent movies with a good rating are more likely to appear near the top. We'll soon start including personal recommendation factors too, so that you're more and more likely to find a movie you'll love at or near the top of the list.

So without further ado, here are the films of the moment on Netflix:
